1. About Night Nurses & Happy Baby Night Nurses™

What is a night nurse, and what does a night nurse do for a newborn? A night nurse provides overnight newborn care so parents can rest while their baby is cared for throughout the night. At Happy Baby Night Nurses™, our core-market newborn care is provided exclusively by experienced Registered Nurses. During the shift, your nurse handles feeding, burping, diaper changes, soothing, settling, safe sleep, bottle-related care, and detailed overnight charting based on your baby's needs and established care plan.

What makes Happy Baby Night Nurses™ different from a night nanny, doula, or Newborn Care Specialist? In our core markets, Happy Baby Night Nurses™ provides overnight newborn care exclusively through experienced Registered Nurses with clinical backgrounds such as Mother/Baby, NICU, Labor & Delivery, or Pediatrics. A night nanny, postpartum doula, or Newborn Care Specialist may also have extensive newborn experience, but they are not necessarily licensed nurses. In areas served through our Individual Placement program, families may choose to search for an RN, doula, or Newborn Care Specialist based on their preferences.

Are all Happy Baby Night Nurses™ caregivers Registered Nurses? Yes, in our core managed-care markets, newborn care is provided exclusively by Registered Nurses. Our RNs have relevant clinical experience and maintain required credentials, including current CPR/BLS certification. Nurses also complete credential verification, background screening, and our internal vetting and onboarding process before being assigned to families.

What are Happy Baby Night Nurses™ core markets? Happy Baby Night Nurses™ core markets are the locations where we provide our traditional managed overnight newborn care service. In these markets, Happy Baby Night Nurses™ coordinates your family’s schedule, RN coverage, and ongoing care throughout your service period. Our current core markets include: - Northeast Florida — Jacksonville, Ponte Vedra Beach, St. Johns County, St. Augustine, Amelia Island, Nassau County, Clay County, and surrounding areas - Tampa Bay — Tampa, St. Petersburg, and surrounding communities - South Florida — Miami, Boca Raton, Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Pompano Beach, and surrounding communities - Dallas–Fort Worth, Texas - Austin, Texas - Houston, Texas - Nashville, Tennessee In our core markets, newborn care is provided exclusively by experienced Registered Nurses. Families outside of our core markets may still receive support through our Nationwide Individual Placement service. Through Individual Placement, Happy Baby Night Nurses™ can help families find an experienced Registered Nurse, doula, or Newborn Care Specialist based on their location, schedule, and newborn care needs. For example, Orlando is currently served through our Individual Placement program rather than our managed core-market service.

Do you help families outside of your core markets? Yes. Families outside of Happy Baby Night Nurses™ core managed-care markets may be eligible for our Nationwide Individual Placement service. Our placement team can help families search for an experienced Registered Nurse, doula, or Newborn Care Specialist based on their location, preferred schedule, start date, and newborn care needs.

2. Booking, Scheduling & Pricing

How much does a night nurse cost? Night nurse pricing varies based on your location, shift length, weekday or weekend scheduling, and the type of service you are booking. Happy Baby Night Nurses™ provides market-specific pricing before you move forward so you can review the cost of care for your location and requested schedule.

Does insurance cover a night nurse? Happy Baby Night Nurses™ is a non-medical service, private-pay newborn-care service and can not bill insurance carriers directly. Insurance plans vary, so families interested in possible reimbursement should contact their insurance or benefits administrator directly to determine whether any portion of postpartum or newborn support may qualify under their specific plan.

How do I hire a night nurse through Happy Baby Night Nurses™? Start by submitting an inquiry or registration form with your baby's due date or birth date, location, preferred start date, schedule, and newborn-care needs. Our team reviews your information, confirms availability, and schedules a consultation. Once your care plan and schedule are aligned, a Services Agreement is completed to officially reserve care on our calendar.

How far in advance should I book a night nurse? Many families reserve care 60–90 days before their ideal start date, and some book even earlier. Because we maintain a limited RN team in each market, popular schedules can fill quickly, particularly for families requesting three or more nights per week. Last-minute requests are always welcome and may be accommodated when RN availability allows.

When can overnight newborn care begin? Happy Baby Night Nurses™ can begin overnight newborn care as early as your baby’s first night home, depending on RN availability and your family’s preferred start date. Some families reserve care beginning immediately after hospital discharge, while others choose to begin several days or weeks after baby arrives. Because babies do not always arrive on their expected due dates, our team works with families to adjust anticipated start dates whenever possible. We recommend reserving care in advance so we can plan RN coverage around your expected delivery window.

What hours does a night nurse work? Our minimum overnight schedule is a 10-hour shift, such as 8:00 PM–6:00 AM, 9:00 PM–7:00 AM or 10:00 PM–8:00 AM. Eleven and Twelve-hour overnight care are also available depending on your market and RN availability. Scheduling is discussed with your family before care begins.

How many nights per week and how long do families typically book? Most families find that a minimum of 3-4 nights provide the best chance to get recovery. Many families request approximately 12–16 weeks, although care can be customized around your family's needs and availability. Some families want intensive support immediately after bringing baby home, while others prefer several nights per week over a longer period.

Will I have the same night nurse every night? Continuity of care is a priority. For families booking three or more nights per week, we typically build a small, consistent RN rotation rather than relying on one nurse for every shift. Many of our nurses also maintain full-time hospital positions, so using a small care team allows us to work around their hospital schedules while still providing your family with dependable coverage. This approach also gives families the opportunity to become familiar and comfortable with a consistent group of nurses rather than frequently introducing new caregivers. If having one dedicated caregiver is an absolute need or strong preference for your family, we may also be able to assist through our Individual Placement service. This option works best when the family has several weeks of lead time for us to recruit, screen, and identify a provider who can be dedicated primarily to their schedule. Individual Placement is subject to candidate availability, location, requested schedule, and the type of provider you are seeking.

How does billing work? Happy Baby Night Nurses™ bills every two weeks in advance for the upcoming two-week service period. Families maintain an approved payment method on file and receive billing documentation for their records. Credit-card payments are subject to the applicable processing fee. Debit cards do not incur a fee.

3. Newborn Care, Feeding & Sleep

What will my night nurse document during the shift? Your nurse charts your baby's care throughout the night in the Happy Baby Night Nurses™ app. This may include feedings, diaper changes, sleep and wake periods, temperament, relevant observations, and other care activities. Parents can review an organized overnight record so they know what occurred while they were sleeping.

Can a night nurse help if I am breastfeeding or pumping? Yes. Your nurse works with your family's established feeding plan. For breastfeeding families, the nurse can bring baby to you when it is time to feed and then take over burping, diapering, soothing, and settling afterward so you can return to sleep. If you are pumping or using expressed breast milk, your nurse can provide bottles according to your feeding plan and handle appropriate bottle and pump-part care.

Can Happy Baby Night Nurses™ help with formula feeding? Yes. Nurses can prepare and provide formula according to the family's established feeding plan and safe preparation and storage guidelines. They also handle bottle washing and sterilization related to the baby's overnight care.

Do your night nurses sleep train newborns? Happy Baby Night Nurses™ supports healthy sleep foundations, age-appropriate routines, safe sleep, and sleep shaping. Formal sleep training is handled through the appropriate sleep-training support rather than by withholding feeds from a hungry newborn. For infants under eight weeks, we follow hunger cues, and any requested feeding-spacing plan requires written pediatrician authorization. We will never withhold food from a baby showing true hunger cues.

Do you provide night nurses for twins or multiples? Yes. Happy Baby Night Nurses™ provides newborn care for twins and multiples. During your consultation, we review feeding plans, sleep arrangements, routines, and any special considerations so your assigned RN understands how your family wants care structured throughout the night.

4. Safety & Scope of Care

Do the nurses stay awake for the entire shift? Nurses may remain awake for the entire shift if they prefer. Happy Baby Night Nurses™ also permits one optional light-rest period of up to 45 minutes when the baby's needs have been completed and the infant is safely sleeping in an appropriate crib or bassinet. If a nurse uses light rest, an audible 45-minute alarm is required, the baby monitor must remain audible, and the rest period is documented in the nurse's charting. The nurse remains responsible for immediately responding if the baby needs care.

Is Happy Baby Night Nurses™ a medical home-health service? No. Happy Baby Night Nurses™ provides non-medical newborn care in the home, even though our core-market caregivers are licensed Registered Nurses. Nurses do not diagnose conditions, perform medical assessments, or provide skilled home-health treatment. Their role is newborn care, safety, feeding support, soothing, sleep support, and parental recovery support.

Do your nurses administer medications? Our nurses do not administer prescription medications or provide medical treatment during Happy Baby Night Nurses™ shifts. Certain routine newborn-care items permitted under our policies, such as diaper cream or approved gas drops, may be used according to the family's instructions and applicable policy.

What household tasks will the night nurse do? The nurse's primary responsibility is your newborn. As part of baby-related care, nurses can wash and sterilize bottles and pump parts, dispose of soiled diapers, and fold and put away clean, dry baby laundry when requested. Please note*** Nurses do not start laundry cycles or move laundry from the washer to the dryer.

Will the nurse bathe my baby? No. Happy Baby Night Nurses™ does not provide infant bathing during overnight shifts. The nurse's role is focused on feeding, diapering, soothing, safe sleep, and other approved newborn-care responsibilities.

Can pets be present while the nurse is caring for my baby? For safety and liability reasons, pets should be kept securely away from the nurse and infant during the shift unless another arrangement has been specifically approved. Even friendly pets may respond unpredictably to a new baby, unfamiliar caregiver, or overnight activity in the home.

5. Daytime, Live-In & Individual Placement

Do you offer daytime or live-in newborn care? Daytime and extended newborn-care arrangements may be available depending on the market, provider availability, and your family’s needs. Because many of our Happy Baby Night Nurses™ RNs also maintain hospital positions and primarily provide overnight care, consistent daytime, live-in, or extended-hour coverage may be more difficult to accommodate through our traditional managed-care model. In some cases, our Individual Placement service may be the better option. This allows us to recruit and match your family with a dedicated RN, doula, or Newborn Care Specialist whose availability better aligns with your desired daytime, live-in, extended-hour, or more consistent schedule. This option works best when families have several weeks of lead time, giving our placement team time to recruit, screen, and identify a provider who can accommodate the family’s desired schedule and serve as their primary, dedicated caregiver. Families interested in daytime, live-in, or extended newborn care should submit an inquiry so our team can learn more about your needs and recommend the most appropriate service model.
